Thank you for this! Super useful for someone coming from the ecological literature trying to expand into markets, financial tools etc. for biodiversity. Saving this for future use. You have a new subscriber!

Thanks Jonathan! I really like your clear writing. The piece on generalists vs specialists was great. +1 subscriber for you too :)

Another really thoughtful, and thought-provoking article. So useful, exactly what we need to all get our heads around this stuff, communicate about it effectively within our organisations and solve the environmental crises. Thanks for all that you contribute in getting us there!

You're way too kind Edwina..

A bit like carbon credits or allowances, biodiversity credits exhibit characteristics across a broad range of different assets including commodities, bonds, currencies, and land/property. The trick I think is to employ those things that worked in the respective financial markets to make biodiversity credits more effective at delivering the impact you want to see while also enabling people exposed to biodiversity to manage their risk.

Appreciate the thoughtful comment Peter.

Would you add any relevant biodiversity credit properties? I'm sure I missed something.

Hi Simas. I can't think of anything obvious that you've missed.

Have you seen the EU survey on biodiversity credits? Understanding the state of biodiversity credits and their link with the carbon market https://green-business.ec.europa.eu/news/new-survey-understanding-state-biodiversity-credits-and-their-link-carbon-market-2024-05-08_en

Indeed I have Peter. Hearing more European public bodies are exploring biodiversity credits

Brilliant explainer! I appreciate the detail and the research you've done in this.

I also see a narrative in myself that pertains to regulation, policy and legislation. And forcing entities to comply.... it seems like the only way these days

Thanks!

Love your illustrations btw
